First Holy Communion

Parish, parents and schools work together to prepare the children to receive their first Holy Communion. Home is the most important place to pass on faith while school and parish build on the work already begun by parents. When you present your child for the Sacrament of the Eucharist you make the choice to provide them with full membership in the parish family, following initial commitment made at Baptism.

Children should be baptised in the Catholic Church, usually for at least two years, before receiving their First Holy Communion. The preparation period for First Holy Communion is a two year programme, in keeping with the first class Grow In Love programme. Your child should be baptised before entering this period of preparation for First Holy Communion.

The dates for First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion are decided at the beginning of September and will be posted here, and through the school.

First Communion Preparation Programme
The First Communion Parish Preparation programme has been running successfully in the parish. This is a parish-based programme of preparation for the Sacrament of First Holy Communion which involves parish and parents working together in order to help the children to play an active part in the community. The parents of the children, along with some members of the family Mass team, take responsibility for organising Sunday Masses during the year when a particular focus is placed on the on-going preparation for First Holy Communion. All families are invited to be actively involved at Mass on Sundays as part of the parish/family preparation.

St Brigids' School: 7.30pm on Monday, 12 March 2018
St Lorcan's School: 7.30pm on Thursday, 15 March 2018

We wish to confirm that First Holy Communion will be celebrated at 12 noon Sunday Mass in St Philomena’s Parish on the last Sunday in April and during the month of May 2018. This has been the practice in parishes in other Irish Dioceses for many years and was first implemented into our parish in 2014. It means that the celebration of the children’s First Holy Communion will be centred at the heart of the parish community. The Communion dates for 2018 are as follows:-

Sunday, 29 April 2018 - Ms Andrew's Class
Sunday, 6 May 2018 - Ms Delaney's Class

Sunday, 20 May 2018 - Mr Phelan & Ms Fenton's Classes
Sunday, 27 May 2018 - Ms Clarke's Class

A series of preparation meetings & prayer services for parents/guardians who intend to present their child for the further commitment to faith in God through the Catholic Church takes place from the beginning of the school year. The next meeting will take place on:

Wednesday, 17 January 2018
in St Philomean's Church
at 7.30pm - 8.15pm.

This meeting and prayer service will be facilitated by members of the Parish Pastoral Council and the Parish Liturgy Group. This meeting is for parents and guardians, not for the children. It will take approximately three quarters of an hour. A letter advising of this meeting has been circulated to the Second Class Students in both St Bridget’s and St Lorcan’s schools. We look forward to meeting with you and to discussing the practicalities of the year of preparation for the Sacraments at the meeting.

Parents were asked at the initial preparation meeting to submit their names and contact details so that they may be involved in the core group that will work with the parish through this year’s preparation. Please note that all parents are welcome to share in these meetings and process at any stage when you are free to attend. The final Core Group Meeting will take place in Le Chéile House (which is behind the church at the right hand side) on Monday, 12 February 2018 at 8pm - 8.45pm

There would be a practice/meeting on the Thursday evening prior to each of the Sundays on which children will be receiving their First Holy Communion. This will provide an opportunity to make last minute preparations for the great family and parish celebration of your child’s First Holy Communion.
